In the Sunday Times, Michael Ruffles discussed the recent allegations by independent Senator Nick Xenophon about possible criminal activities in the Church of Scientology.
Ruffles, while defending Scientologists' right to believe whatever they wanted to, clearly thought the core beliefs of that church were a little ... questionable.
Apparently they believe someone called Xenu from some master alien race solved a galaxial over-population problem by shipping a few trillion 'people' to Earth so he could dump them into volcanoes. It seems they don't have volcanoes ANY where else in our galaxy... And here I realise that I am too ridiculing their beliefs. (Occurs to me that perhaps Xenophon's concerns stem from embarrassment that they are eroding the reputation of anyone whose name starts with X - a pretty elite group to be sure).
But you can't help but think about Ruffles' own stated Christian beliefs. Who is he to cast (albeit implied) criticisms on the beliefs of scientologists? Has he not stopped to wonder about how others may view his own beliefs?
"There's this one guy, and he created - out of nowhere and nothing - billions of suns around each of billions of galaxies, across an area of space spanning some 46 billion light years, in six days, then - understandably rather tuckered out - took a day off. Then he got back to work putting people and animals and plants on just one planet around just one of those trillions of suns, and promptly set about smiting and drowning and turning them to stone, oh and retrofitting millions of fossils of animals that had never actually existed into the regolith."
How is that any more rational then the tales of Xenu?
And without excusing in any way whatever criminal activities Scientologists may have been getting up to, are there any Christian churches that have clear consciences when it comes to criminal or just plain un-"Christian" behaviour?
