Sad confirmation that the Christchurch Cathedral will have to be demolished

Years ago when a friend and I travelled through New Zealand, we stayed in a hotel opposite the Christchurch Cathedral. Irrespective of one's position on religion/s, there was no denying that this was a magnificent building and a cornerstone of that beautiful city.

So it was very sad to see the main steeple collapsed following the earthquake a year ago. And you could see that it was going to be a rallying symbol for the people of Christchurch.

So those people must be devastated to hear today that the cathedral will be pulled down. Granted there is the intention to eventually rebuild it, but the uncertainty around that must be a big concern for residents. Certainly from the video interview on this page, it seems the Bishop has been copping it from a lot of people.

A very sad outcome for a grief-stricken city.
