CSIRO builds a strawbale house and torches it...

The CSIRO put strawbale building to the bushfire test today. It took a licking but it's still ticking!

First they had Joost build their structure - strawbale walls with steel frame:

Then they gave it a serious dose of dragon's breath:

And it came out the other end - almost unscathed:



I love strawbale buildings...

UPDATE: CSIRO have reported the stats for the burn thus:

"external temp reached a scorching 1000oC while inside the house it was a cool 35oC"
