Night sky viewing highlights tonight and the next few nights

There are some good highlights coming up for anyone interested in space matters.

Tonight and tomorrow night we have a close conjunction between a sliver moon, Jupiter and Venus. You'll see them low in the western sky shortly after sunset, as this screen grab from iPhone app Star Walk shows.

Mars will rise at 6:01 in the east-north-east and will be obviously red-orange, with much whiter but not quite as bright Saturn following in the same location from 8:11.

Not in space (yet anyway) is a Russian Proton rocket slated to launch from Kazakhstan at 10:10pm tonight.11:10pm (updated - time conversion error sorry). The payload is a Boeing-made Intelsat to deliver video, network and voice services to Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Watch live here:

The International Space Station will have evening visible passes, as per the following table from heavens-above.com, with the best passes being 31 March (4 minutes and -3.2 magnitude - very bright) and 1 April (6 minutes, -3.0).

Try setting up your camera with a wide-ish field of view and locking open to capture the ISS track in an arcing line across the star tracks in a tighter circle around the southern pole.

A bit more of a challenge will be the ATV3, which is a resupply ship launched by an Ariane 5 rocket from French Guinea on Friday, and currently playing catch-up to the ISS:

For magnitude, the smaller the number the brighter the object, with negatives even brighter.
